Hypnotherapy For Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the more prevalent mental health issues out there. It certainly forms the largest part of the issues that I help people with.

Whether it's in relation to a specific event or situation, social anxiety, OCD, or more general, hypnotherapy for anxiety can certainly be beneficial (and you only have to take a look through my What People Say pages to find out how many people have overcome their anxiety with my hypnotherapy).

You don't just have to take my word and that of my clients to know that hypnotherapy can be very effective for anxiety.  Last year (2019) I wrote about research showing that hypnosis is a highly effective treatment for anxiety (have a read here: The Effectiveness of Hypnotherapy as a Treatment For Anxiety).

And there are certainly reasons why hypnotherapy can work so well for anxiety.

Anxiety and Hypnotherapy

When you struggle with anxiety, your head fills with all of those worst case possibilities and other catastrophising thoughts. The more you worry, the more you can find yourself absorbed and focused on the thing that is causing you anxiety. 

If your anxiety levels are particularly high, you may lose track of time and other considerations because those anxious thoughts take over and fill your mind. You can get lost in your anxiety. Those anxious thoughts take over your focus and create an expectation of things going wrong or badly in some way and you find yourself experiencing anxious symptoms. The more you go through this anxious cycle, the more habitual it can become and the more you can anticipate and expect it.

Yet in many ways this cycle also reflects what happens within hypnosis, where you become focused on particular ideas (e.g. around feeling more calm and confident and being able to handle things),and that leads to reduced anxiety symptoms and feeling better.  

The same psychological processes of imagination, cognitions, beliefs and expectations that you are using to experience anxiety are used within hypnosis and hypnotherapy towards how you want to be thinking and feeling. And because it's the same things that you are good at with your anxiety, you will be good at hypnosis too. Thus you can interrupt that negative pattern and, with the right strategies and techniques, find yourself back in control of the kind of stuff that goes on inside your mind.

And so, for psychological reasons, from client success stories and from the scientific evidence, it's clear to see that hypnotherapy can be a very good approach if you want to overcome your anxiety.
