To win the battle against anxiety you have to start relaxing and giving your tired brain a rest from all that worry and stress.

In the same way that when you are physically tired you need to rest your body, your brain also needs regular time outs.

Most people with anxiety will say they never relax, or they aren’t very good at it – some will even say they never relax, their minds are always whizzing around.

Learning to relax is like any other skill or activity – the more you practice it, the better you get at it and the calmer and in control you start to become.

Learn To End Anxiety

Start doing this:

1) Set aside 5-10 mins a day when you are unlikely to be disturbed. Sit or lie in a comfortable position.

2) Close your eyes and start paying attention to your breathing. Don’t try and change it, just notice your breathing. Notice the rise of your stomach as you inhale, and how it falls as you exhale. Notice the increasingly calm sensations throughout your body with each breath. Imagine those sensations slowly spreading into each and every part of your body.Don’t try to change your breathing. Don’t try to stop your breathing changing. Just let it continue.

3) If your thoughts start to wander at any point just gently guide them back to your breathing.

4) At the end of the time, open your eyes, take a moment to adjust to your surroundings again and then continue with your day keeping as much of that calm feeling as possible. In the same way you wouldn’t go from not running to trying a marathon (hopefully!), build up how long you relax and how deeply gradually over time.

Relax about how relaxed you become and just know that the more you do this the calmer your mind will become.

Best wishes
